A new old tram

A tour from Sintra to Praia das Macas aboard a picturesque, panoramic and centennial transport: the rural electric, unique in the country. Along the way, the rustic landscape and mountain views.

There are stories that end well and this is one of them. These 11 km of track were opened in 1904. In 1954 the trams stopped to circulate between the station of Sintra and the Palácio da Vila, while the section to Azenhas of Mar was also eliminated. In 1975 the line was closed. Partially reopened in 1995 as part of Sintra tourism development plan and Sintra becoming an World Heritage site, only in recent years it has been operating fully, linking the northern edge of the town to Praia das Maçãs. A stroll through the pedestrian area of Estefania leads to the tram terminal - at a five minutes walking distance from the station or car parking areas. Then, just take your seat on board and enjoy the landscape. In the first descent of a few kilometers, the line sides the road to Praia das Maçãs, with its dozens of large curves. Only after the old garage (Live Science Center) in Ribeira de Sintra, you will have the right angle to observe the landscape of the mountain on the left. From Galamares, with the road going to the left side, the field of vision either is extended, or confined to a sort of lane between farms, some wooded, some shredded by gardens. Most quietly, as the speed of this transport is no more than 20 km/h, you will cross Colares, the tram rails following a parallel to the Maçãs river. The final section of the journey is along the pine forest of Banzão, still full of interesting examples of summer villas. After some 45 minutes, you begin to see the sea and feel the Atlantic breeze and the fresh odour of the sea. If the weather is good, you will not resist to the appeal of the beach. There are also several cafés and restaurants as well as some possibilities for walks up to Azenhas do Mar (following the same road) or across the beach and up by the coastal footpath that leads to Praia Grande. Access By the Estefania tram terminal, in Sintra, not far from the CP station and the museum, at the beginning of the road to Praia das Maçãs. To have into account You can travel from Lisbon by the Sintra Line train, taking it, for example, in the Rossio Station, now reopened to the public. Check the tram schedules because services are more frequent in summer and weekends. Other You can proceed on foot by the old route of the line, between Praia das Maçãs and Azenhas do Mar, to see this quaint village amidst coastal cliffs. Meals Restaurants and terraces in Praia das Maçãs as O Loureiro (T. 219 292 581). Other spots to visit Centro Ciência Viva de Sintra (on the way, in the former garage of trams in Ribeira), in the old neighbourhood of Colares
