This castle with Gothic, Mannerism and Romantic characteristics rises upon a 196m high hill, offering one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the region. The fields of Ribatejo, Alentejo and Beira mountains can be seen at a 70km distance. It may have been built in the 12th century by King D. Afonso Henriques (possibly upon older edifications), in order to defend Tagus Line. IN 1173, it was donated to the Order of Santiago. Later, it was rebuilt and occupied many times, namely under the ruling period of King D. Dinis, when the keep was built. Apart from this, it also played an important role in the defence against foreign invasions.
