It is the most ancient botanical garden in Portugal. Marquis de Pombal ordered its creation in 1768, according to a project signed by Italian Domingos Vandelli. It was built to be a museum and a nursery for botanical species from all over the world. It is nowadays under the management of Instituto Superior de Agronomia – School of Agronomy. Ajuda Botanical Garden was remarkably restored. It is located next to Ajuda Palace from the opposite side of Calçada da Ajuda. Several décor elements such as fountains and staircases reveal a Baroque influence. The Garden of Scents was specially conceived for blind persons, for all information is written in Braille and the plants are placed in such a way so they can be easily touched and smelled.
