Alcácer do Sal Castle dates back to the 6th century B.C. (Iron Age). Under Roman occupation, this castle played a major role in Alentejo’s economical and political life. During Visigoth ruling it became one of the strongest castles in the Iberian Peninsula. It was not until 1217 that it was permanently conquered to the Moors. After Christian Conquer the fort lost its military importance, though. Nowadays you can still see the ruins of Aracelli Convent, 13th century Santa Maria Church, the remains of the city and several houses. (National Monument)
