Away from the crowded beaches of Algarve coastline, the town of Alcoutim has quite ancient roots, presenting countless archaeological findings of several civilizations, such as fort hill ruins. This deeply rural council is surrounded by the right margin of Guadiana river. Both the river and the typical regional architecture give a unique nostalgic flair to the riverside towns, evoking the memories of those times when this was a sailable river and an important means of communication. The memories of those times were preserved by the River Museum, one out of many museums spread throughout the municipality. Among them, it is worth highlighting Santa Justa Centre that presents an ancient primary school of the 50’s and 60’s of the 20th century and Vaqueiros Centre, promoting agricultural work. In terms of heritage, you should pay an attentive visit to some churches and mostly the castle, whose schist walls have witnessed bloody fights against Castile and peace treaties. The main handicraft products are especially utilitarian objects. There are many weavers in the council who produce handmade wool or linen pieces or even artisans who make jute puppies, depicting typical regional characters.
