Alentejo Wine Route

The cultivation of vines in the Alentejo region dates back to ancient times and all the people who passed by there recognized the special quality of the wines of the region which are now among the most appreciated of the country. Although distinguishable eight sub-regions of wine production, the wines have very similar characteristics. This route offers three routes to get to know the richness of this vast and magnificent region. The "Route of Sao Mamede" goes mostly through the area covered by the Natural Park of S. Mamede and includes some of the most beautiful and typical towns and cities as Alentejo Portalegre, Marvão, Castelo de Vide Crato, Flor da Rosa, Alter do Chão, Avis and Sousel. The second proposal, the "Historic Route", is centered in Evora, a World Heritage city, covering also Arraiolos, Estremoz, Borba, Vila Viçosa, Redondo and Monsaraz. Finally, the route of the "Route of Guadiana" follows the Guadiana River and the extensive plains, through Mourão, Moura, Vidigueira, Alvito and Viana do Alentejo.
