Isolated at the top of a hill in a place formerly occupied by Lusitanian people, Romans and Visigoths, this castle was built by the Arabs in the 10th century. Three centuries later, it was conquered to the Moors. In fact, this was the last castle to be conquered in the Algarve. Aljezur Castle has kept the surrounding walls and two towers (the cylindrical tower is noteworthy). However, the castle is not well preserved, mainly because of the 1755 earthquake that caused severe damage. From the walls, you will have a beautiful far-reaching panorama: the flood plain, Cerro das Mós and the mountain ranges of Espinhaço de Cão and Monchique in the distance. (National Monument)
