Situated in the western zone of the Algarve at the heart of the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast, the council of Aljezur is one of the most peaceful and well-preserved of the district. The town is divided in two sections, each one placed in a different hill. The oldest section is located around the castle over the houses. From this spot, you will contemplate beautiful scenery. The fort was founded by the Arabs in the 10th century. This people have left several marks on town’s heritage and name (“Aljezur” means “bridge village” in Arab) of the town. However it was conquered back in 1426. Legend has it that the Christian troops surprised the “infidels” having a bath in the neighbouring Amoreira beach. That is why the bath tradition on August 29th has remained so alive in this coast. The main economical activity of this council is agriculture, but tourism is becoming increasingly important in local economy. No wonder, since these lands are extremely rich in terms of nature and landscape. Here you will find a great variety of flora and fauna, beautiful cliffs and charming beaches, along with far-reaching dunes and small shell-shaped dunes. Among council’s beaches, Odeceixe is perhaps the most renowned one. Still, you will discover many other beaches along the coastline, surrounded by an imposingly wild desert scenery.
