Description of the place: Almendra is situated near Douro river. Its origins date back to Roman occupation. In 1202, this town was given the first “foral” (Royal document). Town’s name is probably related to the word “amêndoa” (almond in Portuguese), for the fields of almond trees are one of the main regional attractions. This town has preserved some valuable monuments, such as the Main Church, a fortress-temple, some manor houses, a 16th century pillory and Town Hall building. Calábria ruins, an ancient village founded from 3rd to 2nd century B.C. are also worth mentioning.
