Situated at a crossroads at the village centre, Alter do Chão castle is more a castle-like palace than a fortress. It was built in 1359 by D. Pedro I. It has an irregular pentagon-shaped plan with three rectangular towers and two cylindrical ones. The over 400m high keep is located at the centre of the arms’ square, wherefrom we have a view over several miles in the surroundings. Near the council’s headquarters, we find the famous Royal Stud Farm, founded by D. João V, where the Lusitano Horse is kept for breeding and improving. It is located on a plain, named after a nearby river stream. Alter do Chão is council’s headquarters tha includes four civil parishes. It was an important village under Roman occupation. Vestiges and ruins of ancient thermal stations can still be found next to the town in the archaeological site Ferragial d’El Rei. This council is rich in historical heritage and natural beauties, as well as good cinegetic potential. The most important species are the partridge, the rabbit and the hare. The historical village Alter Pedroso is located 3km away from the town, and it stands out for its far-reaching view.
