A jewel on the mountain coast

Situated in a green valley, 275m high Arouca is council’s headquarter, comprising 20 civil parishes. Several megalithic monuments are the living proof of how remote the territory occupation is. The council’s main highlight is Arouca Monastery, dating back to the 10th century, even though the current complex dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. The conic mountain Senhora da Mó, located 1,5km west from Arouca, offers a splendid view over the valley and the houses. 1085m high São Pedro-o-Velho mountain also deserves our attention, situated 15 km southeast from Arouca, as well as famous river Caima cascade, Frecha da Misela, in Albergaria da Serra, located in the neighbour mountain Serra da Freita, a true natural paradise, regularly full of snow in the Winter. The most important popular feasts are te Holy Queen Feast, on May 2nd, an the procession dedicated to Senhora da Mó, on September 7th and 8th.
