This Alentejo village, halfway from Montemor-o-Novo and Estremoz, is famous for its traditional tapestry, skilfully embroidered. However, there is more to Arraiolos. Seen from afar, the village can be easily recognised, because of the castle’s silhouette, rising upon São Pedro hill. The castle’s walls date back to 1511, when King D. Manuel gave a new “foral” (Royal document) to Arraiolos. The Village Door leads to the walls through the south wing. On the right side, you will find the clock tower in Manueline style. The last bastion of the castle keeps three of the former five towers. The highest one is the keep. Santarém Door is located in the west side, in the middle of two rectangular towers. It has a Gothic arch. Next to it, you will see former church Igreja Matriz do Salvador with its 15th century vaults. In the village’s surroundings, the ancient Nossa Senhora da Assunção Convent was transformed in a Pousada.
