The main church dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Assunção dates back to the 16th century. It has Late Gothic design and three naves.In terms of council’s heritage, our attention should be drawn to the following monuments: Vassalo Fountain (18th century), Nossa Senhora da Luz Convent (16th century) and the keep of the former castle. The valuable Esperança Palaeolithic cave paintings can be found in the surroundings, namely in the coast of São Mamede mountain (Louções mountain), east from the village, on the road from Monte Novo to Nave Fria. It was conquered to the Moors in 116 by D. Afonso Henriques, but it was lost until 1242, when it was permanently conquered by D. Paio Peres Correia, master of Santiago Order. In 1475, D. Afonso V assembled his court in Arronches, in order to marry his niece Princess D. Joana, heir of Castile throne, since he was widow of his first wife by that time. On June 1st 1512, D. Manuel I granted Arronches a new “foral” (Royal document) and later on July 25th 1678 D. Afonso VI issued a new one. Olive oil, cereals, and vegetables are among the main agricultural resources of this council. Cork, firewood and wood are produced here. As far as livestock breeding is concerned, the main species are: cows, goats, sheep, horses, mules and pigs. Wool and dairy products are also produced here.
