Built in the end of the 80’s of the 20th century to supply Macedo de Cavaleiros and to water agricultural fields, Azibo reservoir is one of the biggest dams in the Iberian Peninsula, presenting a surrounding landscape with a Mediterranean touch. A nature park was created as a result of a partnership established between Macedo de Cavaleiros municipality and the Environment services. This park offers walking trails, an interpretation centre, a picnic zone and a river beach, 1 km away from Podence village, set in a landscape of great natural beauty. The riverbanks provide shelter for several bird species and small mammals. In ecological terms, these margins are highly valuable, for they were classified as protected area of regional interest.
