MORE INFORMATION

Description of the place: This village is famous for its views and Romanic church, and it is situated 10km south from Douro and 5 km west from council’s headquarters, Tabuaço. The vestiges of human presence get lost in time, as it can be seen in the Sabroso fort hill, occupied nowadays by Nossa Senhora de Sabroso Chapel. Barcos was an important urban settlement during the Middle Ages. It was council’s headquarters until the 19th century. This legacy can be observed in the Town Hall building, the pillory and Roda dos Expostos. The main church, dedicated ro Our Lady Nossa Senhora da Assunção, Is one of the best examples of late Romanic architecture, presenting interesting porticos, especially the south-oriented one in one of the side façades. In the Spring, it is worth enjoying the view over the cultivated fields on the way down to Douro. This village is covered by the recent Douro Vine-Growing Villages.
