The art of making baskets in the parish of Gonçalo (Guarda) dates back more than 400 years and it is already knownas the European basketware capital. It is said theat most basket weavers throughout the country are from this area and "where even those who are not basket weavers know how to make baskets". In addition to the baskets the local craftsmen (who usually work sitting on the floor) also make other wickerwork, such as, handbags, bread baskets or chairs.
