Beira Interior Wine Route

There is evidence that the cultivation of vines in this region was already well established in the fourteenth century. Comprising three sub-regions - Castelo Rodrigo, Pinhel and Cova da Beira, Beira Interior wines, both reds and whites, have been gaining adherents. In this region there are many points of interest, and the route is divided into three itineraries. Covilhã, one of the entrances to the Serra da Estrela is the starting point for the route "From the Serra to Coa" that also leads to Belmonte, with its beautiful castle, Sortelha, a well-preserved village that maintains its granite houses, and to Castelo Mendo, a remarkable fortified town. The second track, "Along the Border," takes us back in time, to the period when there were constant border disputes. Almeida, with its imposing stronghold, is one of the best examples. Also in the third itinerary, "Through the Castles of Beira Alta", visitors go along paths leading to old medieval fortresses, with the towering city of Guarda as the main attraction of this circuit, which also reveals the mysterious town of Marialva and Celorico da Beira, considered the capital of the Serra cheese.
