Also known as House of Diamonds, due to the façade décor, this was also the trading spot of products brought from the East by Portuguese sailors. Brás de Albuquerque, who was the brother of India’s Viceroy Afonso de Albuquerque, ordered its construction between 1521 and 1523. The earthquake of 1755 destroyed the upper floors that have remained abandoned until the middle of the 20th century. This house was rebuilt in 1983. During the recovery works, salting ponds, along with other constructions dating back to Roman period were found in the basements. It is located near Praça do Comércio in Lisbon. The building is being adapted, in order to house the headquarters of José Saramago Foundation, the Nobel Prize in Literature 1998.
