The Bishop’s Palace Garden is one of the most extraordinary Portuguese Baroque gardens and a very good reason to visit the city of Castelo Branco. It was built in the 18th century, on the initiative of the first Bishop of Castelo Branco, D. João de Mendonça. The garden was build next to the former palace, the Winter residence of Guarda Bishop, which is nowadays Tavares Proença Júnior Museum. The garden is unique in terms of originality and elegance. There are several granite statues among its bush alleys, depicting the four corners of the world known by that time (Europe, Asia, Africa and India), Zodiac signs, the seasons and the months. This garden reveals a Baroque inspiration. Two monumental staircases – Kings’ and Apostles’ staircases - evolve from the lake, whereto the Moses waterfall flows. Your attention should be drawn to the representations of the Kings of the Third Dinasty, the Phillips, and of the King Cardinal D. Henrique. Their statues are smaller than all others, due to their close relation to Spain.
