The tools used in the making of this lacework are: a cylindrical pillow, bobbins (wood or ivory), pins, "piques" (perforated cards) and cotton thread. In Vila do Conde the lacemaker has the particularity of holding the bobbins with her palms down. Under King John V, there were legal restrictions to this industry. However, the lacemakers in the northern region, managed to obtain a special permit that allowed the use of lace in the country. Since 1991, Vila do Conde has a Museum devoted to the bobbin lace, at the House of Vinhal.
