Today a national cake, prepared during the Christmas season, the "bolo-rei", king cake, was made in Lisbon and the first cake was sold in the Confeitaria Nacional, founded in 1829, at Praça da Figueira, where it can still be found today. Some say that this recipe is a version of the French "gallete des rois" and, according to Luis Pastor de Macedo (an expert in the city and traditions of Lisbon), the recipe was brought from Paris by the son of the owner of the bakery, soon becoming a success, by the hand of the master confectioner Gregorio.
