The bulrush is a kind of reed that grows on the banks of rivers. In Arronches it can be found in the margin of the stream passing through the area. It is picked when it is green and then set out, in bunches, in the sun to dry. The craftsmen make rugs, baskets, and decorative items. Many of these artisans are shepherds. In Alentejo, rugs and mats are widely used because they are very resilient.
