Located in the middle of the island, Caldeira is a true icon of Faial island. It is a huge grater of an extinct volcano, which was in the origin of the island. The crater is 2000m in diameter, 400m deep and 7km in perimeter. It is an impressive element of the landscape, consisting of an immense hole covered by green with a small lagoon at the bottom that you can see through the almost never-ending fog. Usually called “Silence Cathedral”, this place is threshold of the laurissilva forest that covered the island before human settlement. All around the Caldeira lays an area of green vegetation with colourful sets of blue hydrangeas that “populate the island”, in the words of writer Raul Brandão.
