Also known as Tojal de Vila Chã Caves, Carenque Necropolis consists of three common graves excavated in the rocks. These caves were likely built in the 4th millennium or beginning of the 3rd and play an important role in understanding of Portuguese Pre-History, since they belong to a Mediterranean cultural and funereal tradition dating back to the Neolithic/ Chalcolithic period. Its heritage is housed in the Museum of the Geological Services of Portugal and in the Archaeology National Museum. It was classified as National Monument in 1936.
