Carmo Church in Faro stands out as one of the most important aesthetical expressions of religious and artistic heritage in the Algarve region. The church’s founder was Bishop Dom António Pereira da Silva (1704-1715). He bought this land and officially opened the church in 1719. In the interior, gilt carved wood plays a major role in the church’s décor. Master and sculptor Manuel Martins was in charge not only of the design, but also of all the works in gilt carved wood. He also conceived Santa Teresa altarpiece. In 1715, the studio of his followers was entrusted with the creation of São Vicente Ferrer (nowadays São José) altarpiece. In terms of altarpieces, your attention should be drawn to the images of John the Baptist and Saint Joseph next to the tabernacle and the images of Saint Anthony of Lisbon and Saint Mary Magdalene of Pazzi. Attached to the church, there is a small bone chapel.
