Carnival in Ovar

Carnival in Ovar is a major tourist event in the region, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Throughout the years, families of Ovar make great efforts in preparing the Carnival Parade, making costumes and masks in a happy combination of exoticism, creativity and humor. By the mid 50`s of the twentieth century, there was in Ovar a so-called `Dirty Carnival`, which was a sort of battle with flour, eggs, dust, soot and the like. The so-called Organized Carnival was held for the first time in 1952, when, in the various neighborhoods, groups of friends began to get together to have the party in a creative and orderly way. All neighborhoods came to adhere to the competition, and this has brought even more inventiveness to masks and floats. In 1983, the samba school Costa de Prata opens the contemporary era of the Vareiro Carnival, with lots of samba and very few clothes.
