Carpets of Beiriz enjoy great international prestige and have a characteristic that makes them unique: their design can be seen from the inside out, as their finishings are perfectly made. These carpets are made with cut wool, manufactured in very rustic wooden looms, and their stitches brought them fame: Beiriz stitch, star stitch and shepherd stitch. They feature original designs with flowers as a predominant theme. The history of these carpets is recent, dating back to the first quarter of the twentieth century and to the inventor of the Beiriz stitch, Hilda d' Almeida Brandão Rodrigues Miranda (1842-1949). At that time, she established a workshop in the village of Beiriz and, later, a factory, where she started producing tapestries, in partnership with an assistant, Rita Conceição Campos.
