The wine land

Legend has it that the name Cartaxo was given by Holy Queen Isabel as she crossed these lands, since there were many stonechat birds (“cartaxo”) in this place. Spread along the Tagus, wine growing and wine production have triggered local economical development since ancient times. The living testimonies of this tradition are Rural and Wine Museum created in 1984 and Wine Feast settled in 1988 that every year (in the end of April) celebrates local pride of good productions of white, red and rosé wines. You can always taste a wine in one of the eight stands representing the civil parishes or buy it at the sale pavilions, thus enjoying its flavours. In terms of heritage, it is worth highlighting the Main Church (16th century) and the Church of Nossa Senhora da Purificação (17th century) filled by tiles and gilt carved wood. In the last years, this council has grown a lot in terms of urban development, due to its privileged location in Lisbon’s surroundings
