It is one of the longest Portuguese reservoirs, built in 1951 in Zêzere river in a narrow valley, situated a few kilometres away upstream from the confluence with Tagus river. This giant artificial lake that for years supplies Lisbon area stretches from Tomar surroundings to Ferreira do Zêzre, Vila de Rei and Cernache de Bonjardim (Sertã). It is a privileged zone for practising nautical sports (environmentally restricted though). Castelo de Bode dam is equipped with access ramps, leading to the water near the dam wall in Castanheira river beach, Ferreira do Zêzere.
