A river in the middle of the forest

253m high council Castelo de Paiva consists of nine civil parishes. Vines cover its hills and it has a wide forest area, crossed by rivers and water streams. It is the biggest council of Aveiro district. Several Megalithic monuments, along with many Roman vestiges can be found in this council. In 1513, it was given the Royal “foral”. This is a traditionally rural area, mainly focused on wine production (the region’s famous wine), Castelo de Paiva entered a deep industrialised phase, namely in terms of shoe, textile and wood industries. The council’s greatest highlight is Paiva river, ideal for nautical sports, with many river beaches. This river flows into Douro river, in the surroundings.
