The cave painting complex of Tagus Valley is considered one of the most important Post-Palaeolithic art sets. It includes over 30.000 cave paintings spread throughout 40km in the margins of Tagus river. The cave paintings date back to 6500 BC and 2500 BC, representing geometrical, anthropomorphic and animal-shaped symbols. Nowadays, over half of these paintings is submerged by Fratel dam. They can only be seen in the Perais area and downstream from Fratel dam. The most important archaeological sites in the council are Enxarrique, Alagadouro and S. Simão.
