This 800m high imposing castle is the main highlight of the town, offering a view over the beautiful surrounding landscape. The exact construction date remains uncertain; however it was supposedly built under the ruling of Roman Emperor Caesar Augustus. It is a fact, however, that King D. Afonso Henriques (the first King of Portugal) conquered this square to the Moors and that important works were carried out in this fortress under the ruling of D. Sancho I, D. Dinis and D. Fernando. According to historical testimonies, the castle was totally devastated by Restoration wars, but the building managed to keep its former beauty until present day.
