This building was erected from the 1st to the 2nd centuries, probably by Augustus emperor or by Agripa general. It belonged to a big Roman villa that lived from tin activity. Throughout the years, several theories arose around its main function: it was regarded as a temple, a board house or even a prison (legend has it that Saint Cornélio was incarcerated in this hundred-cell - “centum cellas” - building). However, the excavations carried out from 1993 to 1998 indicate that this construction was included in a vast residential area owned by Lucius Caecilius, a wealthy Roman citizen, who traded regional tin.
