It is a beautiful example of religious architecture, embracing the convent, the church and cloister, in circular plan. It is located next to the north exit of upper platform of D. Luís Bridge (Porto light rail circulates here), in Vila Nova de Gaia. In 1996, the Historic Centre of Porto was classified UNESCO World Heritage site, also including the Monastery of Pilar Mountain. Its first stone was thrown on August 28th 1598 under the ruling of King D. João III. The church began to be built in 1598. The works lasted until 1672. The church has a porch, a door that dates back to 1733 and walls covered by 18th century tiles. Also worth highlighting, is the cloister with an open wing covered by a circular vault, which is set upon 36 Ionic columns and decorated with lacing works. From this place, you have one of the most extraordinary views over Porto, Douro river and its metallic bridges, the cathedral and Medieval Ribeira quarter.
