This church was probably founded in 1507, as a result of a promise made by the workers of Lisbon’s Custom House during the plague period. It is a Mannerism style building, rebuilt in the 18th century, whose interior walls are covered by 16th century blue and white Renaissance tiles depicting the life of the Virgin. In one of the church’s room, you can observe interesting popular votive offerings (paintings, flags, wax moulds and photos). In the back of the church, you will find a eucalyptus plantation that ends in Fonte Santa, where the apparition of Our Lady Nossa Senhora da Atalaia took place, according to the legend. Traditional symbolical washing rituals continue to be held here in present day, during parish’s main procession on the last August Sunday.
