It is one of the few rivers which run south to north throughout an extensive and deep valley. At the end, near the river mouth, the respective hydrographical basin is limited by the birth of the Aguiar stream and is west of the Centieira and Vale da Vila streams. On the right hand side margin, its levelling reaches altitudes of 400 and 800 meters, on the opposite margin these values are less ranging from 100 to 500 meters. The discovery of rupestrial engravings (along 17 kms of Vale do Côa) gave life to the history of this river.
