Country’s most ancient university – formerly called “Estudos Gerais” (literally, General Studies) - was founded by King D. Dinis in 1290 , however it was not until 1537 that the University settled in Coimbra. From the 13th to the 16th century, the University moved three times to Coimbra and Lisbon. However, it was only in 1537 that the University was definitively transferred to Coimbra, according to the decision of King D. João III. Under D. João V and D. José I ruling, major works were carried out in the University, so that it became a monumental building, as well as world wide famous monument. The Rectory is one of those architectonical landmarks, whose interior is totally covered by 17th century tiles. The Capelo Room filled with exotic wood furniture dates back to 1659. Solemn acts, such as doctoral dissertations, are held in this room. The Baroque tower dates back to 1728 and became a symbol of this institution. Finally, the greatest University jewel is the Joanina Library.
