In an atmosphere allusive to the Discoveries, the Cidade Vila Baleira, on the island of Porto Santo, devotes one week to Christopher Columbus. This event aims to recreate the seafarer's stays and experiences in the Archipelago of Madeira, in an environment reproducing the times of the Discoveries, with the landing of Columbus and various performances, from theater to music, as well as exhibitions and parades. A historical procession marks this week also. Columbus' first contacts with Madeira occurred in 1478 when Funchal was devoted to trade in sugar. Columbus lived in this archipelago, having married the daughter of the captain of Porto Santo, where his son Diogo was born.
