CORVO
The peaceful rock
The smallest of the Azorean islands is the unique in the archipelago with only one locality – Vila do Corvo – where a small community of hundreds of people who still face adversity and a highly peripheral location. It is located by the sea and the houses are concentrated in a platform in the south of the island. Apart from typical two-storey houses, similar to the ones of the north of the mainland, you should also visit the Church of Nossa Senhora dos Milagres with a 16th century Flemish image that was found in the sea. Along the coast there are several mills that give a different touch to the landscape, even though most of them are out of work nowadays. Still, Corvo’s greatest attractions are the spectacular Caldeirão lagoons, sheltered at the bottom of a former marine volcano, in the middle of a beautiful green landscape. This place is also an excellent natural viewpoint that along with Portão viewpoint offers one of the best views in the island. One of the most famous walking trail starts here (very difficult though) along Serrão Alto and Espigãozinho, ending by Cancela do Pico.
