In the beginning of the 19th century, Costa Nova was only a small village of fishermen, who came from Ílhavo. Gradually, it became one of the most renowned beaches of this zone, sought by prominent persons of Portuguese high society, such as writer Eça de Queiroz. The memory of these times is still alive in the so-called “palheiros” (wooden houses painted with red, green or blue stripes). Nowadays, Costa Nova continues to be one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches. Its visitors can enjoy long pleasant walks along the vast sand area.
