The Crosses’ Feast celebrates the victory of Monsanto inhabitants in one of the many sieges; some say over the Romans, while other people say over the Moors. In the beginning of the feast, women walk up to the castle playing the “adufe” (typical square-shaped percussion instrument) and singing. As they reach the top of the castle’s walls, they throw a flower pot as a symbol of the past, when a veal was thrown to enemy troops, in order to show the alleged wealth of this occupied village. Monsanto has also another peculiar tradition: the typical cloth dolls called “marafonas” that are made during the feast. They are supposedly given the power to protect the houses from damaged caused by lightning, so they must remain lying in the beds.
