D. Luís I Bridge was opened on October 31st 1886, connecting Ribeira quarter to Gaia quay and Batalha square to Pilar mountain. This project has the signature of engineer Teófilo Seyrig, an Eiffel pupil, who had an incompatibility with him. The bridge has an iron arch and five pillars that sustain two metallic platforms. One of the platforms is connected with the upper deck and the other one with the lower deck. It is 395m long and 8m wide. Nowadays, one of Porto’s light-rail lines circulates in the upper deck.
