Abrantes, a city located over the Tagus River, may have been founded by the Turduli (990 years B.C.) or by the Gallo-Celts (308 B.C.). It was later occupied by the Romans, the Visigoths and the Arabs. Abrantes was finally conquered by D. Afonso Henriques in 1148. Located at the meeting point of three provinces – Ribatejo, Beiras and Alentejo – the population has a very important means at its disposal, the river. The Tagus has provided a diversified commercial activity with Santarém and Lisbon, as well as direct trades with foreign countries. In the 16th century, this privileged location was determining and Abrantes became one of the most important trade centres, as well as one of the most populated localities in Portugal. In present day, it is a dynamic city with rich vestiges of the past, such as S. Vicente Church, the manor house of the Albuquerque family, the former Royal Palace, Misericórdia Church and the Castle. The riverside urban park is one of the last city’s attractions, not only because of its beautiful landscape by the Tagus, but also because of its facilities: an inflatable weir, bars and terraces. In terms of gastronomy, “palha de Abrantes” (egg-thread sweet speciality) and the famous “tigeladas” (a baked dessert made of eggs, milk and cinnamon) are worth mentioning. These specialities were born in the convents of the region. Its rich handicraft must also be discovered, especially during the Handicraft and Popular Art Fair, held every year in the last week of May. The city’s feasts are held by then with the famous contests of flowering streets. Pego Thermo Power Unit is the main technological infrastructure, deeply changing the landscape of the region.
