The volcanic Desert Islands cover an area of 9672 ha. Located southeast of Madeira Island, they include three islands: Ilhéu Chão, Deserta Grande and Bugio. Desert Islands have a rocky relief and very steep cliffs, which are almost impossible to reach. The fauna of the islands consists of a colony of monk seals, shearwaters, Madeira Storm-petrels, Bulwer’s petrels, Fea’s petrels, among others, especially the tarantula of the Desert Islands. The birds that inhabit the island are, for instance, the saffron finch, the Berthelots Pipit and the following birds of prey: the buzzard, the kestrel and the owl. There is also a wide plant variety, as far as flora is concerned. Historically, it is worth mentioning that an attempt was made to colonise the island through the plantation of wheat and barley in Deserta Grande. During World War II, five lookout stations were built here to watch submarines. They were later used by whale hunters. Nowadays, visits to this place have been quite restricted, since you can only visit these islands with an official authorisation.
