Évora Cathedral

Seen from afar, Évora Cathedral is the main element of city skyline with its towers and side façades covered by battlements, resembling a fortress church, which it was indeed. It was built in from the end of the 12th century to the 13th century. It is considered one of the biggest Middle Age Episcopal temples in Portugal. Recently, some mural paintings were found, which has valued the cathedral even more. The Gothic style part of the cathedral was built later and it is particularly monumental. The Apostles’ representation in the portico stands out as one of the most grandiose ones in Portuguese Medieval art. Also worth mentioning are Manueline style cupola; the main chapel, a Neoclassic masterpiece; the excellent light game provided by the use of black and white marble or the sculpture décor, allegedly created by Bellini.
