After conquering Leiria to the Moors, D. Afonso Henriques ordered the construction of this castle in 1135. Walls were built around the castle under the ruling of D. Sancho I in 1195. In 1324, D. Dinis constructed the keep and transformed the fortress in a palace. In the 16th century, the vestry was built between the main chapel and the bell tower. In 1915 began the castle’s restoring works, ordered by the League of the Castle’s Friends, with some financial support from the State. In 1969 an earthquake would cause significant damage in the castle, but Leiria Castle still preserves its beauty. Built in Romanic and Gothic style, despite the major recovery intervention in the 20th century. It has a polygonal plan and a strong defensive position. The Pena Church has only one nave. (National Trust Building)
