In the region of Bairrada, the first written references to the cultivation of vines date from the tenth and eleventh centuries but it was only in the nineteenth century that the Bairrada region became a producer of quality wines. Located in the coastal center of the country between the cities of Aveiro and Coimbra, the name derives from the nature of the soil called clay. The geographical area covers all the counties of Anadia, Aveiro, Oliveira do Bairro and part of the districts of Águeda, Aveiro, Cantanhede, Coimbra and Vagos. The climate is influenced by the proximity of the Atlantic, yet there are still many signs of the Mediterranean proximity. The name can be used for white, red, rosé, and sparkling wines and also for "aguardente bagaceira" (literally, burning water, made with a residue of sugarcane). Baga is the red wine variety or casta prevailing in this region and it is usually planted in clay soils. The white varieties are planted in sandy soils and the variety Fernão Pires is the most common in the region, where it is called Maria Gomes.
