The history of the Upper Douro vineyard is very old. Several archaeological discoveries and documented references evidence the region's wine culture, which goes back to the early centuries of our era. But it was in the seventeenth century that the port wine reached worldwide fame after being discovered by the British. In 1756, the General Company of Agriculture of the Upper Douro Vineyards was established, thus giving birth to one of the first Wine Regions of the world. The region engaged in the manufacture of this wine and has never paid attention to the production of table wines because all the good grapes were used in the production of this generous one. However, after the '80s with the emergence of modern, well equipped wineries, this reality has changed and today some of the best table wines in both national and international markets are from the Douro region. Located in the northeast, it stretches through the valley of the Douro River and its tributaries, including the districts of Vila Real, Bragança, Viseu and Guarda. Rich in microclimates, the region is divided into three sub-regions, Baixo Corgo, Cima Corgo and Douro Superior, each producing wines with specific particularities. The vines are on the top of the deep valleys and unfold until the river bank, creating a landscape recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2001.
