As with the entire Western region, the Lourinhã has always had its wine production linked to "aguardentes", brandies, since this was the area that for centuries fueled the improvement (fortifying for distillation) of port wine. The wine region was recognized with the aim of promoting and producing high-quality aged brandies, being the only one in Portugal, and one of the three zones with protected geographical status in the world, the others being Armagnac and Cognac, in France. This small wine region covers the counties of Lourinhã, Peniche, Obidos, Bombarral and Torres Vedras, where the climate favors the production of wines for distilled wines, by their Atlantic nature, with mild winters and cool summers, where the temperature rarely rises above 26 ° C. The "aguardente" in Lourinhã is produced from wine made with red and white grapes of recommended and authorized varieties such as Alicante Branco, Alvarelhão and Cabinda.
