DOC Setúbal

Pioneer in the development of wine products, the cultivation of vineyards in the Setubal peninsula dates from the time of the Phoenicians and the Greeks, and met further development during the centuries of Arab occupation. The wine production tradition is confirmed by various historical references to wine in the region, such as the one in the first charter of Palmela, granted in 1185 by D. Afonso Henriques. The red varieties occupy about 80% of total vine varieties, predominantly the "French Castelão" (best known as "Periquita"), for being the oldest brand of Portuguese table wine, with over 150 years. The white varieties include Fernão Pires and Moscatel, used for the generous wine of the same name. This is a Wine Region since 1907. The climate is mixed, sub-tropical and Mediterranean, with medium temperature and influenced by the proximity of sea and river basins of the rivers Tagus and Sado.
